"Hey, our wholesale costs went up 300%, so we raised it 400% because fuck you, we're all doing it and you don't have any other options " is still price gouging and collusion.

Your comment made me start to read it because I thought, "nah.. it can't be that bad!" It was worse. I'm sorry you read the whole thing. I stopped.
In the US, ticket fares have gone down a small amount since bag fees began.
However, US airlines also stopped serving meals on domestic flights around the same time and seats have gotten smaller. It's hard to make an apples to apples comparison when they are providing less service and cramming more of us in. I also wonder if that fare decrease ignores BS like having to pay to select a seat unless you purchase a more expensive fare.
I agree it would be nice to have a more a la carte experience if the prices actually reflected that. I'm not quite old enough to have purchased my own tickets before the internet, so I can't remember if prices were as volatile then.
Less than 20 years ago check bags were free. Companies have been conditioning the consumer to assume more and more cost.
At the rate we're going, it's always too soon.

I live in korea and recently visited Japan. Both countries are wonderful to visit.
Went to Tokyo and Kyoto, the touristy spots were very busy. As long as you're polite and respect Japanese social "rules", it's fine. And there's plenty of other places to visit if Kyoto is too contentious right now.
Korea also has a lot to offer in Seoul and Busan. It's a short few hours and reasonably priced high speed train between the two cities.
Plenty of other countries in the region to visit as well.
So they could have done it all along?
