A crystal's resonant frequency is determined by its size and shape as well as it's material. The quartz crystals used in watches and other precision crystal oscillators are machined very exactly. Even then it's not that they can't vibrate at other frequencies, they're just not good at it.

I used a similar setup once in the Appalachians. The back wall was fortunately still standing. This makes me want to learn the hurdy-gurdy even more! I mean, in reality, I'm never putting in the time to learn to play it anyway. So, in the fantasy of me being dedicated enough to learn to play an instrument, the added fantasy of me maintaining a finely tuned instrument is just added appeal.
