Real life. I seem to meet a lot less pedophiles that way

Maybe they just hide it better IRL πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

or inside churchs

Are people just making it a habit of randomly joining unknown servers? I have literally never run into pedos on discord and I've been active in 50+ (not at the same time) since it launched

.....hi what's your discord.

It's plural, so one is fine.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It's actually supposed to be read "no, Pedos allowed!"

I'd like to use something other then Discord, but the problem is none of my friends give a shit about privacy and all use Discord still. I will have zero chance getting them to make the switch when they inherently don't care about their data privacy.

I have tried to change my friends too but also another thing is quality audio and noise suppression. I have tried Mumble , Jami , Element all of them lack a proper noise suppression algorithm that's its good enough for us.

I tried running the armcord wrapper, but when I wanted to stream a game to my friends in the server, it wouldn't work through armcord , then getting armcord shut down and logged into Discord proper was hugely problematic so I ended up abandoning it all together.

I think the hurdle we have is, no one but the privacy minded want to change, so for individual decisions like switching off of gmail to proton mail, works great, but for apps that are group based in nature, and only have value if everyone is using it..... just about impossible to make the switch.

Because of Lemmy having a space for it in the profile stuff, I discovered Matrix. It's basically the same thing, but without the bullshit.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago

Matrix is my fav. But I also use IRC and XMPP.

I miss the IRC days. The only reason I even use discord is for information and support from companies or groups that only use discord. I really wish the things I follow would move away from discord but it doesn’t seem likely.

Same. 20-25 years ago I had a second monitor only for winamp+IRC. I missed hanging out online with people with which I had shared interests. I'm not on IRC anymore, mostly because the communities disbanded, and I've failed to find a new one that I enjoy with regulars rather than randos.

Kinda wish xFire would make a comeback.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Damn almost forgot that existed!

What a shit name for such a cool project

Names like this make is impossible to search for the project because there 20 million things called harmony

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It’s more a state of affairs than an app per se

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Matrix is the only I see going places. It's already used by many open source and privacy projects, as well as on lemmy. It was the most admired software in the stack overflow survey this year

I host my nerd herds Teamspeak3 service still. Its pretty much my internet residence, but from what skuttlebutt I have heard, they are skipping TS4 and going to TS5. Its supposed to be a self hosted discord clone... With some dumb licensing thing... Honestly im not interested and will keep TS3 as long as I can.

We used Jitsi for our D&D sessions. But it crapped out on us too often so we switched to Discord.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've used the self hosted jitsi for years without problems. What was your issue?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

We didn't host it ourselves. Maybe that was the problem.

Quite possibly the only option that's worse
