Hi r/DataHoarder,
I’m upgrading my NAS from 4TB drives to 16TB, and I could use some advice. After researching, it seems ServerPartDeals is the community favorite for reliable used HDDs, but I noticed that Recertified Seagate drives on Amazon are similarly priced. Here’s where things get tricky.
I have a large Amazon gift card balance that could cover about 1.5 drives, so I’m considering buying two from Amazon and the last one from ServerPartDeals. However, I’ve read mixed reviews about Amazon's recertified drives, with some reporting a slightly higher rate of issues. On the other hand, ServerPartDeals seems to have a stronger reputation for reliability, though at a higher cost to me personally.
My questions for the community:
- Would you think it worth leveraging my Amazon gift card balance to cover most of the cost, even if it might involve more risk or hassle?
- Has anyone here had recent experience with Seagate Recertified drives from Amazon? If so, how was the reliability?
I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences to help me make an informed decision. I’ve included a picture below of the Amazon drive in question. Thanks for your input!
