Thanks for sharing this. I rarely watch YouTube videos but this was worth the watch. Very well-rounded talk that doesn't just boil down to "no fun allowed."

I love her suggestions. I already make my own costumes and re-use some of the stuff for the rest of the year. One thing she didn't mention... I go CRAZY on the makeup on Halloween and "spooky time." Fun expression without creating a lot of waste! (I already had the supplies for it anyway.)

Slight disagree on the pumpkins. The pumpkin I get for my porch doesn't taste good. I don't throw them away, and you shouldn't put them in a secluded wooded area (whoops). Composting is the best which I will try this year.

It is crazy how much people will just throw away old decor they used for like one season. I do very minimal decor because I don't want to store it. (I have some rust colored kitchen towels that I use all year but make sure are ready to go on Halloween. I have a cute glass pumpkin that I use every year too.) My mom tried to buy me some more decor, and I told her I don't have a place to put it when it's time to take it down. She told me "oh just throw it away." WHAT.

I go to the local pumpkin patch every year. It's a lot of fun and it supports a local business. They make their own jellies, jams, and treats that my family looks forward to this season. The one I go to has so many activities in it, like a bounce pad, paintball target shooting, mini golf, and zip lines.

I've been a fan of hers for a while because she doesn't just follow the algorithm and it seems that she genuinely wants to help people be better.

My inlaws and mom are the same way. I hate to generalize, but their entire generation clearly just never thought about what happened after it enters the bin. I have started using compostable trash bags and my MIL asked why. "I just don't think I need my trash bag to sit there for thousands of years slowly breaking down because I desired something slightly more sturdy". "I never thought of it that way". Which great, now you hopefully do, but how did you never think of that?!

I'll probably post more of her videos slowly as they come out, I just realized today hey it's Lemmy, we're not overflowing with content, I might as well post the videos I watch that I like!

Yes please do post more videos you like! You inspired me to maybe post too. I stopped making posts years and years ago because on Reddit it just got lost in the sea anyway.

I've found that's definitely not the case here. Lemmy is hungry for content, and down items don't matter anyway so it's pretty safe to post and not have to feel bad if it's downvoted to oblivion!

That what I figured out too. Sometimes it feels weird to be the first one posting some popular contents to Lemmy. Normally, those contents would be on Reddit the moments it aired.

Feels really disingenous to call out Halloween but not Christmas, which is already pushing Halloween merch out of stores.

I mean, it's because Halloween is in 2 days. I'm sure there will be a video about Christmas as well. I think it's a weird take to say "Yeah but you didn't call out X, so obviously you're okay with it"

I think it's always a positive to call out hyper consumption, in any form, any day.

Good thing she has a whole channel dedicated with dozens of videos all dedicated to it. I just posted the relevant one since it's new, it's Halloween, and I thought people who don't like hyperconsumption would like it.

I feel like Christmas is already called out a lot, and rightfully so. (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, anyone?) Many other holidays too to a lesser extent, like Valentine's Day and US Independence Day.

But then the same folks that call these out tend to give Halloween a free pass and some even hyperconsume for this holiday because it's the rebellious one. I really appreciate this video because I have been saying the same thing, it just elicits eye rolls and being talked down to. (And that's just when someone asks me about Halloween, not me saying something unsolicited.)

Can't watch the full video yet... But happy it's here.
