Is there an equivalent to doing /u/user in The Bad Place, to notify and summon someone?

If I type your full username, this happens:

@[email protected]

Far as I understand, there isn't a way to do that. Federated usernames work essentially like an email address because of the decentralized nature of the service. If I type @[email protected] it won't send you a notification, but it will link your profile.

At least I think that's how it works. Who wants to jump in and point out all the ways I'm wrong?

Not saying you are wrong, since it is currently imposible to do here, but I don't think the federated nature of usernames has anything yo do with if they receive a notification or bot since over at mastodon you can tag people properly and they are notified.

Fair point and now that I think about it that seems odd to me since both services can communicate with each other.

I have definitely received a mention notification on Jerboa when someone mentioned me like that.

*crickets* Nope. Not wrong.

Why, yes, I do believe that worked.

This is worth making a suggestion for on github. the fediverse supports it, but its not implemented in lemmy, yet

Short answer: No.

tl;dr answer: There's no tagging function in place unless you manually tag them using markdown, and that still wouldn't notify them. That would be a bandaid solution at best.

I might be misunderstanding something, but you are talking about a tag (same as a private note over mastodon or a profile note in discord)

At least it looks that way because of this

Add the ability to tag users, so a title i give him will be next to his name.

What this user is asking is if you can write someone's name on a post and for that petson to receive a notification that they have been mentioned.

I completely understand what was said - that is not the problem. I'm well aware.

The problem is that I misread the issue I linked to.

My comment has since been edited.

Which is strange because there seems to be support for notifications of a mention? Jerboa even has a section for it, but no one has mentioned me yet so I don't know if it works.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

it works if you comment.

like this - now it shows up in your notifs.

there's no actual tagging function, though.

Consider changing your display name lmao

If you go to https://lemmy.world/inbox

It will show an option for your “Mentions” which you can do by using the “@[email protected]” format (ie, @[email protected])

But my personal “Mentions” inbox just shows nothing (I have been mentioned before by other users but only noticed it while browsing this instance and not via inbox).

The official site (https://join-lemmy.org) mentions the following:

User tagging using @, Community tagging using !.

You can tag people using @[email protected], but only when using the official web UI . Third party apps I tried doesn't seem to support it. For example, try tagging @[email protected] to remind you in 2 hours.

Sadly not. I was under the impression you could, but maybe it’s only inside the same instance? Or not at all and I’m delusional.

Are you using a third party app? Third party apps I use don't seem to support tagging. Try it again using the official web UI.

Would it not work like on Reddit, just with a longer string to tag a person? 🤔

@[email protected]

Edit: Nope :(
