Sept 13 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump and his lawyers may only review classified evidence in a secure place as he prepares for a criminal trial over his handling of secret documents after he left office in 2021, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has been charged along with two aides with illegally storing troves of classified documents at his personal residence and lying to federal investigators who sought to retrieve them.

He had opposed strict security protocols for the classified evidence as inconvenient, saying he and his lawyers should be able to review them in his office at his Mar-a-Lago estate, his personal residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

You know those cases that involve a suspended drivers' license, and the judge asks whether the defendant drove themselves to court, and they say "... No?"

This is the first time I've seen the defendant's lawyer officially say to the judge, your honor my client's being prevented from driving to court, and I'd sure appreciate if your honor could help them get them their car back from the impound.

All I can think of is Trump stammering out something along the lines of "but we COULD have reviewed this information at Mar-a-Lago if you had just LEFT all those classified documents where I put them..."

Well, yes, because they're classified, and that's how you handle classified documents. The fact that the case is about mishandling of the exact same classified documents only makes this whole thing exponentially absurd.

I mean, it's not like Mar-a-Lago has ever been the center of a severe leakage of classified documents

Right?

Good call, he obviously has issues with following protocol when it comes to classified documents.

The fact that he even asked to review classified material in the open should be admitted as evidence that he either doesn’t understand or he doesn’t care that the material needs to be protected. Fucking moron.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Wednesday's ruling by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida is a win for prosecutors, who said it would be inappropriate for Trump to be able to review classified documents at the very location where he is accused of illegally and haphazardly storing them.

Trump was charged in an indictment in June with criminal counts, including violations of the Espionage Act, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements to investigators.

Trump is also under indictment in Washington, D.C., and Georgia over his alleged efforts to reverse his 2020 election loss to Democratic President Joe Biden and in New York over a hush-money payment he paid to a porn star.
