About

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis aspires to be the same kind of Autocrat despised by the founders of the United States. He must be exposed for what he is: a great threat to our Democratic Republic and American values. Republicans don't punish big businesses like the Walt Disney Company for disagreeing with them. Fascists do. DeSantis and those like him are a massive threat to our Democracy.

No rebuilding, no farm picking, and ignoring the effects of climate change...will result in Florida being underwater financially AND physically.

You act like Republicans care more about that than the two Senate seats, governorship, and electoral college votes....

That's all they care about. If they have to literally and metaphorically sink their own state to get those, they won't think twice.

DeSantis sure does seem to have a penchant for doing horrible things as political stunts and then when they actually affect him, he’s “huh? Oh I didn’t mean it”.

Anyway, the entire Republican position on illegal immigration is working as intended, but perhaps he went too far. They know that immigrants come here for work, primarily, and for the most part they work for businesses owned and operated by conservatives - meatpacking, construction, roofing, agriculture. If the government really wanted to stop immigrant workers from coming to the US, the best way to do that would be by prosecuting or fining businesses who do things like have 25 workers using fake (sometimes even the same) social security numbers.

So, they don’t do that. They know full well immigrants provide valuable labor, in addition to being a useful target to whip up fascists resentment. Mainly, by marginalizing this group of the labor force, they achieve their dream for those industries: no worker comp, no health care, no real minimum wage, no OSHA reports, no mandatory breaks, no overtime. Workers know if they speak up about any of that or expect it they won’t just be fired, they’ll be detained and deported.

If you read the article, that's exactly what DeSantis' law does, with predictable results.

And it turned out to be a fucked up disaster, right? Republicans constantly talk as if they want to end all illegal immigration ('build the wall!'), but they don't because our economy is set up, by them, to depend on that source of labor. If they really want to end illegal immigration they'd turn it into legal immigration. As noted, they have a bunch of reasons to love taking advantage of undocumented laborers. DeSantis wanted the "I super tough on brown person!!" points without seeming to understand that the Republican idea is not to actually stop it.

A group that openly hires illegal immigrants, how not very legal.

It's not like American citizens are lining up to do those jobs. Otherwise folks from the Rust Belt would have gotten new jobs already.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's the real kicker, isn't it? "They're stealing our jobs"... but nobody else is willing to do said jobs.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Correction: Nobody is willing to do said job for what they want to pay.

I've worked in agriculture (doing maintenance) and tbh I'm not going to go work in a field in the sun all day for less than like, $25 an hour or something; it's absolutely brutal work. I wish every American would go do it for a summer or two, it might make us appreciate that $.50 cucumber a little more.
