Save your Lemmy homepage as a shortcut on your Home Screen, move your Reddit app and replace it with your Lemmy shortcut.

I just opened Reddit 5x today and had to figure out how to train myself not to use it. This seemed to help me, I hope it helps others too.

Stay strong brothers and sisters. Remember, the more we post, the better it gets.

Just switch to Jerboa. Yes, it's a bit janky, but endure. It's well worth it. Edit: forgot to write, a place where Jerboa icon is is the place where Infinity stood for 4 years. Same phone, yeah.

I wish, but I’m on iOS and the equivalent, Mlem, is straight alpha jank. I actually turned the spot Apollo used to be in, into a folder containing both the web shortcut, Mlem and also a shortcut to Lemmy Community Browser and use all three for different things for now due to feature disparity

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Just use your web browser on mobile. It works pretty damn well. Eventually we'll get an Apollo-level equivalent, but the web browser works SOOOOOO much better on Lemmy as compared to reddit. The responsiveness and themes work great.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm working on a iOS client that's similar to Apollo, with the swiping upvote (my favorite feature lol). So if in a few days you want an alpha invite I can send it to you. It's already at a point where it's on par with Mlem but I'd like to spend a few days fine tuning a few things to get it to a place I would daily drive it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah I’m willing to try it. Just DM me when you’re ready, cheers dude

Ooh what is Lemmy Community Browser?

Im on iOS. I have the beta mlem app. I mainly just use safari. The auto scrolling feed is annoying me. Is there a way to disable that?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Here's the community browser: https://browse.feddit.de

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have to say, I kind of like that Android has a better app than iOS for once (albeit barely).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

What do you mean for once? Especially in the FOSS space iOS is woefully underrepresented. Although I suppose that makes sense given the walled garden, closed source approach of apple

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's definitely been a very interesting situation, in that it's made many of us take a long hard look at what we are with concern to reddit... addicted. I expect some will rail against that classification but make no mistake, these apps / sites are designed to be addictive (iirc they call it 'stickiness').

As well as relentless scrolling throughout the day, I found I was wasting hours feeding into my depression doomscrolling before even getting out of bed. Regardless of what happens next, I'm not installing the reddit app or reinstalling my 3rd party choice (Infinity). Surprise, I'm now getting up much more quickly and starting the day in a better frame of mind.

I wonder how many users they've permanently lost through this debacle?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Now I'm browsing Lemmy before getting out of bed :(

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's just that I have to scroll so far to get new content. And I keep seeing old content that are two days old that stays on the top... I really to new stuff to crawl up!πŸ˜…

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

There is a setting that you can disable "Show Read Posts". This way you will only see new things :)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Omg thanks so much for this tip!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Noise! I will give it a go!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

I deleted Apollo when the blackout started and haven’t used Reddit since. But I’m in med school and should be getting results of step 1 tomorrow 😞 normally I’d be doomscrolling r/step1 and there doesn’t seem to be an equivalent yet. So for anyone reading this: 😭

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm doing exactly what you suggested...but man it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I am both figuring this out and completely confused. But I was that way on Reddit years ago.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I uninstalled reddit. It's the only way to kick it off

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Same. Helped a lot. But after 3 days I still find myself looking for it before remebering that I should look for Lemmy instead.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Just delete that other app. You can do it dude.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

This. Just delete the reddit app entirely. Cut the head off, and start anew.

Leave it in the past. πŸ™

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I would but there's a few things I need to keep it for, like art commissions. But I'm staying on Lemmy the interactions are so much better. Hopefully we get a bunch of community migrations so I can get rid of Reddit completely.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Now I understand what smokers mean when they say β€œmuscle memory” makes their fingers automatically go for the cigarette in the pack.

My fingers have been automatically going to the space where Apollo / RIF was.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I just put jerboa there.

Seriously, this addict's muscle memory is making me use lemmy more!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As soon as someone creates an iOS or android browser for lemmy it's OVER for reddit lol

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Amazing! Thanks so much!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Just switched my RIF app to Jerboa and put it where my RIF app used to be.

It's difficult searching for things in the internet for opinions without putting 'reddit' at the end of it though!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It most certainly is difficult. site:reddit.com is seriously helpful and I can't see myself doing searches without it.

Given how instances and communities work, I wonder how will we do searches in the future as lemmy gets more popular.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Once the internet was bunches of helpful info on weird places. Then search engines helped fix that... hopefully we'll have an equivalent to find info on Lemmy soon

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm crossing my fingers for a LiF is Fun for Lemmy lol

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Tbh, rif was only renamed to rif is fun because they were no longer allowed to use Reddit is fun.

So I wouldn't mind if it was released Lemmy is Fun, but then idk what the holders of the "Lemmy" trademark's policy on using the name.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I did the same. Sync can live in the depths of my app drawer for a while. Muscle memory just got me to write my first comment here. πŸ™‚

The fact Reddit dominates the useful results of so many searches is a problem. That won't work as well with Lemmy because good posts live on different instances.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I did that the first day. Works perfectly.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Yup, works wonders to stop me from opening apollo every other minute. Fuck spez

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Out of curiosity: why don't you delete Reddit entirely? I did that and am very happy.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm waiting to get my GDPR data request.

@bloodtide I used a browser extension to block reddit just so I don't go on it anymore.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I ended up uninstalling reddit, because I opened it too much. Then, as you said, I moved the lemmy icon to where reddit used to be.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Same, uninstalled andnow reddit-free

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago
[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I've done exacly this yestarday. Muscle memory is a powerful thing, but now it just leads me to Lemmy instead of Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yup, also browse "All" communities (not local/Subscribed) by "Hot" for an equivelance to the Reddit homepage and to discover other communities.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I will admit, browsing all communities felt like browsing /r/all before they restricted what could go up there.

It was actually kinda refreshing and nostagic seeing the occasional post from the lemmynsfw instance.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I only use Jerboa now. It has taken the place of my favorite reddit app, Joey. Though it is a little lacking that still requires me to go to my homepage. Usually to add new communities to my feed.

Never really used the official reddit website. old.reddit.com was just to bright, and the modern version is... Well, garbage.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yep, did the same on my tablet, Lemmy with Kiwi Browser in Desktop mode is awesome af ;)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Gone cold turkey. Deleted accounts and uninstalled Rif. There's no going back. It's only Lemmy now. And I must say, it's a nicer place to be.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Hehe, removing Relay was the first thing I did, because even if I just closed it I would tap it out of boredom and habit. But I'll just delete my users and uninstall the app
