Please also check out vegantheoryclub.org for a great set of well-run communities for vegan news, cooking, gardening, and art. It is not federated with LW, but it is a nice, cozy, all-in-one space for vegans.

We ask that the you have an understanding on what veganism is before engaging in this community.

If you think you have been banned erroneously, please get in contact with one of the other mods for appeals.

Moderator reports may not federate properly and may delay moderator action. Please DM an active mod if an abusive comment remains after reporting it.

Welcome

Welcome to c/[email protected]. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • pictures of text require alt-text;
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. Misinformation, particularly that which is dangerous or has malicious intent, is subject to removal.

(posting to both communities)

A carnist lemmy world instance admin has stepped in and meatsplained to the mods while restoring comments that violated the community's rules. They deleted comments that they did not agree with, citing 'misinformation', and threatened to demod the mods if those comments were removed again. The comments were deleted and the admin was banned from the community as per violating the rules of the community, that was until they unbanned themselves (admin abuse) and unmodded two of the moderators because of "promoting harmfull actions against pets".

As far as it stands, if the lemmy world community wasn't already not a safe vegan place for you (it really wasn't) it most certainly isn't now as carnists (lemmy world instance admin) currently mod it.

I suggest any vegan who wants a safe and welcoming space to come and interact with vegantheoryclub.org. Sorry for any inconvienance that this may have caused. I am deeply upset at the admins actions today and don't condone them whatsoever.

I was removed for stating that synthetic taurine is a thing which is used in food all the time and that a whole food plant based diet would kill a cat. according to the admin this is promoting dangerous actions.

It's the vegans that are the animal abusers!

This is why veganism needs to become a protected belief in every country of the world.

Came for the recipes. Stayed for the wrestling match (pops another handful of vegan buttered popcorn into mouth).

vegan buttered popcorn

lmao

This is the "I use Arch btw" of the vegan world. Always have to insert their veganism into everything.

😘

Speaking as a vegan, safe spaces are boring echo chambers. Let's stop pretending that this thrift shop link depository is some relevant real world institution. Someone pays for the bandwidth and those guys can be as hitler as they like towards the rest. Speaking as a psychologist (real talk), my advice is stop paying attention to who removed what and why, for your own good. It's a pile of shit, you shat some, someone else shat their own and they removed yours. It's all just shit anyway.

Steak lover here, and I promise you that the opposite type of communities are also pretty boring. Get any group of veg(etari)anism haters together, and eventually someone will mention the lawnmower joke as if they thought of it themselves. Maybe I smiled a bit when I first heard it as a tween some 30 years ago, but it's not exactly comedy gold.

It basically boils down to "Do vegetarians get hungry when they notice the scent of a freshly mowed lawn? Durrrr". Like I said, not exactly comedy gold, but it routinely shows up whenever a group starts to rip on vegetarians for no particular reason.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago

That was not my point of confusion.

I agree and am happy that you find these "communities of often boring cis-males with a poor sense of humour and probably a background of being bullies to feel better than others" bad.

But introducing oneself as a "steak lover" in a vegan community is still extremely edgy. Not like we dont like steak, but we prioritize being humane and not fucking up the environment.

So yeah, steak lovers can fuck off, while as a human you are welcome here.

I hope you get what I mean.

As a vegan let's just forget about accountability. ...what?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago

You’re victim blaming and using false equivalency fallacy in your argument.

Damn, now I need to manually migrate :/

I'm not vegan but I respect people for wanting a space to discuss.

vegantheoryclub.org is defederated from most of lemmy, but these communities are accessible and they are located on other instances.

@[email protected] what communities do you prefer?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I respect people for wanting a space to discuss.

The mods here were deleting any comments (correctly) suggesting that vegan diets are unhealthy for housecats, so whatever "discussion" you thought was possible before the admins came around wasn't happening, because the mods forbid any discussion that includes difficult facts.

vegantheoryclub.org is defederated from most of lemmy

Seems like a red flag.

Shame on the LemmyWorld admins storming into our place and silencing us. The actions in the modlog are fascist tactics.

"vegans are so annoying they always try to force their opinions on you"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I guess we humans are just like that, huh. Nothing vegan or otherwise about it, just pure being an annoying human. I'm guessing Dunning-Kruger plays a big part here. People being at the peak of Mount Stupid are going to be the most vocal.
