Bicycle Touring and Bikepacking

For all the pedal pushers out there that love long distance cycling. There are no gear requirements and no 'minimum distances' here.

Have you ridden for a cheeky overnighter or a 3 year global trek? Doesn't matter, you're welcome here.

Have you got panniers, bikepacking bags or just a backpack with the essentials? Doesn't matter, you're welcome here.

Have you got the latest in carbon engineering or your dads old 10 speed from the 70's? Doesn't matter, you're welcome here.

I just wake up before unplanned week trip.

So these guys asked me about 2 weeks ago if I want to ride to slovenia. I asked my boss got few days off and then I found out more about the trip - spoiler they didn't know anything, wanted to cover 170km/day and other insane things.

I convinced them to change plans to sth realistic and that made me leader of this group, which isn't ideal because I didn't want to plan or deal with it.

We will go south on EV 13 from Břeclav to I don't know and take train home.

Wish me luck.

Right now I am at campsite, family of 6! has bike touring holiday and we set up tent right next to them.

So we already aren't the biggest bike group here.

Awesome, love seeing families on tour.

Hope you guys get to keep it fun too after rough start!

The bike looks like it will fall apart in few km, the guy told me right now that he wants to ride on it another 100km tomorrow.

It doesn't look like this time I will convince him that it is bad idea. Me and my friend wants to leave them and ride about 150km home after we visit Vienna tomorrow (it will probably be easy day).

And the 150 km isn't insane we will climb about 200m and it is asphalt.

Good luck :)

When are you going to start, like today?

I usually like reading stories where shit happens the best ;)

First stop. On second I hope that I can change one of these bikes at my home cca half way for my old bike with rack and it is 28' not 26' as the guy with backpack has.

Oh man that looks already like it's going to be a fun time! Big group!

There are 5 of us, already there was first blood. Guy with backpack fell (fortunately he carries less gear), my bike didn't worked out so he will have to deal with it.

And we have pretty good pace downhill so I think it will be about 100km today.

Stories where shit hits the fan - centering wheel on the camp spot wasn't on my bingo card but it wasn't unexpected.

The guy has also totally stretched chain so drive train is bad too... We just scratched route and will probably go to Bratislava then Vienna and home.

Kept keeping track of subscribers to the community (and some other cyclung communities), pretty crazy how it grew in the last quarter. I reckon adding "bikepacking" to the community name helped a lot to make it easier to find.

@[email protected] created this topic about tips and tricks about for your area, i will add this as a ressource to the sidebar when i'm back home at my desktop, please add stuff that you think fits.

So clicking on this link of plactagonic's topic got me thinking. One, my reply still has not federated, but that should fix itself once i will edit my reply to something better.

But there's also the problem of only being able to link to the topic on a certain instance only, so people clicking the link won't even be able to add a reply unless they are on that same instance by chance. And as time goes by, it will become harder and harder to find the actual topic on other instances. So i am wondering if it is even a good idea to link to topics from the sidebar. I was thinking to add more faq type topics, but to me this seems to be a very clumsy process now.

After two and a half months of greeting and being greeted by everybody on a bike, today i got onto the ev6 from dannemarie to mulhouse, along a canal, and nobody greeted back, haha. That felt weird. Tomorrow i will just roll over the border to freiburg and then take a train home in the evening.
