I'm thinking about starting a rumor at work about a bonus. Eg "does anyone else know what's going on with the mid quarter bonus?" There is no bonus but wondering if a rumor gets started if it can cause management to maybe give one because of employee expectations. Do you think this will work?

That would never work. There is a better chance there will be layoffs cause by a mid-quarter bonus rumor, definitely a mass email to dispell the rumor.

Do it anyways, just to seed some chaos.

If you’re at a mid to large size company your direct managers likely don’t have any authority to give a bonus. There’s simply no budget they have access that go directly into paychecks.

I like the idea of trying to help your coworkers but I worry that rumor would be more disappointing to them vs any positive outcome.

Type up fake email discussing it, leave it in the break room. Deniability.

Dont do that, you WILL be found put. IT will be asked to identify who printed it off, it's not hard to do with a printer.

Use a library printer if you're gonna do this.

Ah, true. My last job could have done that. Use a home printer.

“Accidentally” leave an email/media announcement on the printer output tray.

If they didn't plan to give you one, they still won't. If they'd considered, then perhaps this could tilt that a little bit in your favour

This sounds fun. Do it and regale us with the outcome.
