TL;DR sounds like there were some widely reported visual bugs related to texturing and lighting under some circumstances (notably character creator) which they're going to patch up

Will be interesting if this addresses people's concerns. I've seen a lot of deep diving into the changes and lighting doesn't account for everything. Lip shapes have been a big one for example and scaling likely won't account for all of it.

I'm in the reasonably happy camp at the moment (although I wish we could see custom hairstyles in the character creator, I want to see my Gyr Abanian Plait!), my main concern is I'll need to adjust my makeup a bit but that's easy enough to do.

Regarding the hairstyles, the benchmark can read saves created by the main game. According to the source I saw, you just have to copy the file over from the main game to the benchmark to load a character with a specific hairstyle set.

Agreed though - it probably won't deal with everything people have brought up. Maybe it's something that will be addressed in the final game release.

Yup, have done that already but it only applies to the benchmark itself; if you go into the character editor after copying the file over it resets to one of the base hairstyles so you can't edit your character with your desired hairstyle active if it's not a base one.
