Hey I’m not Lithuanian myself but been in a relationship with my Lithuanian partner for almost 10 years. I lived and visited the country many times and I keep seeing this.

I used to be surprised by the lack of dinner tables (rather eating at coffee tables), and how each family member eats at different times or even in different rooms, but now into the question.

On a daily basis: In the closer family circle I tend to notice that men usually eat faster than women and get up immediately after finishing their meal, to go for a smoke, outside, to another room or to the sofa, etc. Basically making the meal a transaction.

On family gatherings: What I usually see is that men don’t get around the table until everything is served or even after everyone is already sitting at the table. And basically repeat the pattern, quick eating and leaving.

So back to my question, why do Lithuanian men leave the table as soon as they are done with their plate?
