Made in Abyss follows a young Delver girl by the name of Riko, as she delves deeper into The Abyss, a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past.

As they delve deeper into the Abyss, Delvers experiences the Curse of the Abyss, a series of increasingly severe ailments.

Here are a list of some known ailments at various levels:

1st Layer: nausea,
2nd Layer: headache and numbness of extremities
3rd Layer: vertigo and hallucinations
4th Layer: intense pain all over the body and bleeding from all orifices
5th Layer: loss of all senses and self-harm

Correction

Um actually ... the Curse of the Abyss, only happens when they ascend out of the Abyss, not when they are descending.

This characterizes The Abyss as luring Delvers deeper, while trying to keep them within.
