This was entirely shocking and unforeseen seeing how well all of Russia’s recent space tech has performed

Quick, blame the west!
Hexbear: ITS THE LIBS FAULT
I made the mistake of replying to a comment on hexbear that was erroneously claiming Ukraine started the war, dudes are absolutely deranged.
I too fucked up with that. Got obliterated, dogpiled, my wording sliced apart to catch any out I didn't perfectly cover, and pretty sure banned, so honestly I think I found a good way to defederate from a whole instance, at the user level lol
On one side I'm saddened by the scientific loss. But I'm also a bit relieved that the vatniks don't get to use it for propaganda purposes.
Unfortunately I'm with you on this one. If this really fails, it helps a little bit with the war in Ukraine. Not much, but still....
Really sucks that we're at this point.
For those wondering, and who didn't read the article:
It’s not yet clear if the issue will prevent the lunar lander, which was slated to land near the moon’s south pole as soon as Monday, from attempting a touchdown.
Well it did and it crashed into the moon surface instead it seems
The Russian Lander approches the lunar surface. Pieces of it are rattling and shaking as it makes it way in. Huge chunks of paint have fallen off, revealing the skin of a Lebedenko Tank underneath and a Jerry-rigged Ukrainian toilet
Russian Government: " We have lost contact with the greatest lander ever made. This is obviously the handmarks of Westren jealousy."
that government can't get anything to work. they should invest some research points on meritocracy if they want to advance before Ghandi nukes them.
They already spent all the points on corruption.
Looks like the Roscosmos personnel will be taking a company vacation to Ukraine
Putin be failing at Kerbal Space Program now
No fan of Russian leaders but their engineers are great. Hope they can figure out the issue and avoid the political drama.
I think most of the good engineers have left russia by now.
From what I remember, there's a very heavy emphasis on engineering in Russia, and they produce more engineers than any other country. They may have some brain drain, but plenty to spare.
They're all drunk and the research money has been funneled to Dear Leader's yatchs.
While roscosmos has been a bit of a powerhouse for ISS missions they seem to have difficulty with missions beyond GEO. I hope they are able to land successfully but I wouldn't be betting on it.
Weren't they mostly a powerhouse because America didn't have launch capability for so long?
More or less
The onboard computer just had a little smoking accident, nothing to worry about.
Rapid Unplanned Disassembly, Comrade
Lithobraking manoeuvre performed successfully.
I have to rescue Jeb again?
You get to rescue Jeb again.
Is it manned? I hope the cosmonauts get home safe regardless of nationality
It doesn't look like it's manned, just a robot
It is not manned.
The next manned mission is Artemis 3 in 2025.
And that’s a US mission for clarity of those who don’t follow this topic closely. China also has planned a manned mission to the moon by the end of the decade and all of these countries (India, Russia, US and China) are all targeting the Moon’s south pole which is much more treacherous in terms of geographic features than previous Moon missions. The south pole has frozen water deposits and the eventual goal is to use this area as a refueling station for exploration further out into the solar system. Pretty exciting times!
Wow only 2 years away? Is this really happening? I’ve heard nothing about it.
Edit: looks like the answer is maybe… https://spacenews.com/nasa-weighs-changes-to-artemis-3-if-key-elements-are-delayed/
I know you found your answer already, but for anyone else who doesn't feel like reading a long article:
Yes this is really happening, but no it's very unlikely it will be in 2025. Maybe 2026. Artemis 1 had a relatively minor heat shield issue that could but likely won't delay the Nov 2024 launch of Artemis 2(crewed orbit around moon, no landing), which could in turn delay Artemis 3. The bigger problem though for Artemis 3's timeline is the lunar lander, which is supposed to be a modified version of SpaceX's Starship. Given the issues the normal version of Starship has had, confidence has dropped they'll be able to deliver the lander in time for the mission.
This next bit is pure speculation on my part but I'm personally of the opinion that Artemis 3 will end up merely a crewed orbit of the moon like Artemis 2. With 2 other crewed landings planned for this decade, I feel they'll sacrifice the main goal of the mission before they sacrifice the timeline too much. Artemis 4 is likely also going to swap spots with Artemis 5, as the main goal of Artemis 4(Lunar space station) is at best described as in "development hell", while Artemis 5 is basically Artemis 3 but with a different non-SpaceX lander.
First manned mission to moon after 50 years would generate more press I assume.
Wait you thought a Russian manned mission to the moon was happening and you hadn't heard about it? That would be global news, mostly about the technical "how can they possibly attempt this?"
This moon aggressor is starting to make the administration look bad! It better be careful around any nearby windows...
Time to send poorly equipped conscripts to de-Nazify the moon.
Man thinks Iron Sky was a documentary
Vlad has a very low accuracy at identifying Nazis, he's the one sending them.
Be interesting to see if they can sort it out prior to landing or what
