It's pretty funny how it takes one matchday to immediately generate controversy for the new season

now that's stupid, these are basically never given as a pen.

look at this from last season

there are plenty more examples where the gk looks at the ball and clatters the player and I have not seen a penalty foe it in the last several years

The referee already acknowledged his mistake and the PGMOL apologized. In my opinion, the challenge you showed should also be a penalty.

yeah, but you gotta ask yourself why this is getting such headlines while Everton being robbed against Fulham is not really making the rounds.

If you don't know what I am talking about, I think I made my point.

here it is btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvMAhxkPE48&t=26s

Leno comes out, falls on Tarkowski who is literally just standing there and so the goal gets disallowed.

Yeah, that does not look good refereeing either, I would also be pissed at the referee. My guesses are that a big 6 team is evolved AND/OR the ManUnited - Wolves was the only game of the day, so more people watched it, therefore more online criticism.

he only game of the day,

partially for sure, but mainly it's because it's 90+ minutes at OT and it went in United's favor. United sells headlines and United is hated by a lot of people who's childhood was destroyed by the dominance of SAF, that's about it, if this was a reverse situation of United not getting the pen, you wouldn't have a thread on /r/soccer with 2000 comments I can guarantee it.
