Like I know there's twilight menu, but I like that you can basically hold start and boot right into the GBA games. I wonder if there is a similar barebones approach to playing DS games?

You could set up a forwarder for a pretty seamless experience or go with a DS flashcart. Personally I always found DS on 3DS pretty ugly due to scaling so I recommend getting DS Lite or DSi while they are still dirt cheap.

You can actually hold the start button while launching DA games on the 3DS and they will play without scaling. Makes the size of the images about the same size as a DS Lite (depending on which 3DS you have of course, XL will be larger).

IMO it’s the best way to play DS games on 3DS as I agree the scaling looks awful.

I own a N3DS and DSI (both non-XL). DS games on N3DS with scaling disabled are uncomfortably small compared to DSI. It might not bother you that much if you're used to DS Lite but those black borders just compound on how off it looks like.

Yeah that’s a fair take. I also have an actual DSi that I use with a flash cart to play DS games, but if I only have my 3DS I feel like the smaller screen with weird borders still looks better than the crappy scaling, but I agree neither way is really ideal unfortunately.
