One possibility I read about recently was sea level rise too rapid for the ports to cope with, which could happen on the east coast if the AMOC collapses. The inability to inexpensively deliver goods to most of the population will probably be enough to kick off some shenanigans.

Next week Saturday. It's a full moon, people get a little antsy in their pantsy.

Within 5 years. Congress won't be able to agree on raising the debt ceiling, do one of those government shutdowns again, but this time they never restart it. The shutdown status of limited federal agencies working and non-essential employees furloughed becomes the new normal. The roles the federal government filled gradually become taken over either by state governments or corporations.

Hmm... let's say 2035. By 2032 breadbasket failures and maybe a flu take meat off the American dinner table and a bunch of reactionaries take it out politically and militantly on scapegoats. By 2035, it is clear that mass animal agriculture isn't coming back and governance devolves. From that point, if people can survive the climate change, they will be deprogrammed from the simulation through suffering instilled by nature. Most vertical power systems will fall. It will be a Dark Age, global this time - but like the last one, it will be a period of great progress in practical measures even if it will will be a great loss in imperial terms... if anyone is still alive.

I want to say breadbasket failure by 2028 and severe food shortages by 2030, but I think I'm too optimistic regarding the fragility of supply chains - which comes as a relief to even myself, knowing that I won't get to escape the suffering.

Or it makes it to 2075 and collapses with the extinction of humanity as feedback loops go wild.

Edit: It's probably more likely that instead of meat being pulled from the menu, that the poor will starve so that the rich can continue eating it. In which case you still end up with food wars.

What's your breadbasket failure scenario? Mine is around collapse of the Ogalla-Sioux Reservoir in the US Great Plains...

I think it will become simultaneous pretty quickly (regardless of where it "starts"), as a result of strengthened storms and changing rain patterns.

2048, a century of the government declaring war on communism.

I'm sorry, it's for the greater good

It will either be from global warming related food shortages or supply chain issues with China.

When manufacturing comes back to the US is likely a leading indicator.

Hyper inflation. The war budget is completely out of control. Far too much sanctions. Too much meddling. BRICS, MINT. Collapse of the petrol dollar. The whole isntrael debacle - I can see America especially loosing standing. These self imposed restrictions only end up in higher costs for everyone devaluing the dollar. 2080-2100 if we dont blow ourselves up by then.

Minimum 100 years off. Anything sooner is too optimistic. Maybe 2200’s

I’ve been cooking up a series of posts for the worldbuilding comm where

  • Biden wins 270-268 after Trump gets convicted
  • Trump wins anyway because of two faithless electors
  • Trump dies in prison, ‘Swamy is next in line
  • Vivek tries to pull off Project 2025, just makes everyone pissed off at him
  • and the separate attempts of the EU and China to Color Revolution the country before nukes start getting stolen leads to a blursed quasi-demsoc successor that halfassed going Landback (America’s name got changed but Houston’s hasn’t and tribes still don’t have their promised authority, leaving absolutely no one happy), has lost basically all finance capital to Paris/Mumbai, and is temporarily down a few dozen positions in HDI
  • fortunately we finally got healthcare/guaranteed housing/public transport plans so at least we got a relatively sweeter deal among the fates of historical collapsed superpowers ig
