You are presupposing that people view animals as equals. Even though some people (including you, presumably) do believe that animals deserve the same respect and dignity as humans, the vast majority of humanity does not. Until a significant number of people feel the same way, this is unlikely to change.
Do we have to treat them as equals to afford them a little respect?
Maybe I should have said "afford them a little respect" instead as "treat them as equals," but my point is still the same.

Ask questions about things of which have perplex for years like "why was seeing a pig run a consolation?" or "why don't we shoo our space in to the sun?" and for those of you not comfortable with asking questions, even those like "why is going to bed with your socks on even though you have a spouse a thing?", you're welcome to be part of this community too and answer questions. The only thing I ask is that you be and not a condescending prick.
