Agreed, but the judge can’t overrule the jury
The attack happened in October 2018. The trial didn't even begin until April 2023.
Why was there a 4+ year delay starting such a high profile trial? I can't find the answer to that anywhere.
I live in Pittsburgh. Originally the trial was supposed to take place in 2020 but got pushed back due to covid.
Then the jury pool was absolutely massive. My roommate and I both got served juror summons. I didn't have to go to the courthouse on my date, and he didn't get called as a juror when he went down. I feel like they were related to this.
I was actually surprised they held the trial in the city, especially for a federal one. The wounds for this tragedy cut pretty deep here.
That is pretty normal for cases like this.
I copied my comment from the other post:
Just so everyone's aware, there is also a moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania (where this took place). No executions have been committed since 1999 despite any sentencing since then: Wikipedia.
This was a federal trial, PA’s procedures don’t apply.
Oh, good point! I didn't notice it was a federal trial.
ו שֹׁפֵךְ דַּם הָאָדָם, בָּאָדָם דָּמוֹ יִשָּׁפֵךְ: כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים, עָשָׂה אֶת-הָאָדָם.
Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made He man.
But doesn't the man who kills the murderer also shed a man's blood?
An eye for an eye leaves the world blind.
Put this piece of garbage in the most awful prison we have. Alone and unloved and forgotten with no hope of ever being free. Fuck him over but don't add murder to the world.
how is that any better?
If only there was some sorta free encyclopedia that anybody could edit that had all the many arguments about the death penalty. Oh well.
