For this Friday Movie Night, we’re starting off with another entry in the God Damn America canon, A Raisin in the Sun (1961), featuring one of the most highly-regarded performances of the late Sidney Poitier. A poor black family in the hellscape known as America struggles to get by, until one day, they stumble into an insurance payout that promises to solve all their problems. What could go wrong? Nothing, I bet. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Daniel Petrie, who has not otherwise done much of note. Looks neat; let’s watch. After that is our obligatoy Christmas film for the night, Supermarket Woman (1996), another highly-regarded comedy from Tampopo (1985) director Juzo Itami. A small business owner is really bad at running his grocery store. In comes a middle-aged woman to spruce the place up. The premise is pretty much Tampopo, but with a supermarket instead of a noodle restaurant. Throw in some holday cheer and you’ve got a sweet little comedy that has received rave reviews everywhere.

We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here:
