Its creator, Andrew Spinks, explains that the enormous success of the title prevents him from abandoning the project permanently, since there is still demand.

I "beat" the game in 2012, but it was an ungodly number of hours. Is it worth playing through again? New stuff? New mechanics? A small world might go faster?

It's absolutely worth playing again, tons of new content and quality of life improvements. Progression should be faster in a small world, but personally I feel like medium is ideal for a single player world.

I'd personally get Tmod and install Calamity Mod with a few other choice recommendations.

It's still such a great game with great modders.

I played Starbound before Terraria, and found it to be more interesting. Played it for several hours then moved on.

Years later, Starbound seems abandoned while Terraria is popular and healthy. Is that about right?

Terraria is just the best

While I haven't delved too much into the last few content patches, it's definitely a game that has such an insane amount of things you can find and experience, and unless you do the exact same playstyle every playthrough it has a ton of replay value.

Having played on and off since 1.0 it's still a game I find worth picking up and doing a new run of.

I won't complain about free updates, but I'd rather have a second game at some point. Most equipment and enemies have just become boxes on a checklist and I'd love to regain the sense of danger and exploration my first playthrough had all those years ago.

Try mods. There's a bunch of them.

Honestly, I wish Spinks would call it done just so the modders could stop chasing a moving target.

I have not looked into mods at all. Do you have any suggestions for mods which overhaul the game more or less completely?
