What’s with the colored boxes?

Political compass joke. They represent 'sides' of the political spectrum - authoritarian/libertarian and right/left. It's not very accurate in any real sense, but it can be used for fun memes.

Sadly, the Reddit Political Compass community was overrun with far-right chuds.

Yeah. Maybe that shit should stay with Reddit.

Absolutely. What a load of shit the political compass is anyways.

That is because that particulkar political compass itself is a right wing invention, created by right wing libertarians back in the day and specifically meant as propaganda for their ideology.

It is complete bs and a very sad thing that so many, especially young people, take it so seriously as something that is actually useful for gauging political opinions.

They're mainly conservatives and trolls who are lying and pretending to make jokes.

Conservatives have been doing this for a long time, they think they're being subtle and tricking people into thinking they're serious. It's built on the classic idea they have that everyone secretly agree with them, and they use things like political compass memes to try and convince people it's okay to say it out loud. But they never seem to realize that most people don't "say it out loud" because they don't agree.

TL;DR: They're stupid people who think they're really smart. And it's sad to see them flailing around and drooling at the mouth while thinking they're Machiavelli.

I mean it's still better than just saying you're a leftist or on the right. Political beliefs are a multi-dimensional spectrum.

I always thought that was how the sub started. The template reeks of right-wing 4chan meme-ry.

Can't say about the subreddit specifically, but there were groups elsewhere, such as on Facebook, that predated the Reddit sub that were definitely more left-leaning.

I used to like the political compass memes subreddit... Back when it was actually not that far from its ideal of all political ideologies engaging in friendly shit talking.

I think the subreddit went downhill, honestly, as the more crazy alt-right subs got deleted (the_donald as an example). I think deleting them was good, but doing it caused the people that were regular users of those subs to look for other places to do what they do. Politicalcompassmemes was one of the last places where alt-right conservatives would be somewhat tolerated for the alt-right things they say because it was the "punchline". Eventually they outnumbered everyone else, started making strawman accounts to fake "winning debates" with, and replaced all the memes with propaganda bullshit.

It used to be a place where people who explicitly disagree about literally everything remembered the human element of the people they were goofing around with. They still claim it's like that of course, but now it is just a conservative echo chamber, because everyone actually left of center either stopped going there or gets downvoted out of view every time they say something leftist.

That's just how the alt right functions. The jokes. When they say something that makes someone feel unsafe or is way over the line and someone objects

"It's just a joke! Jeez you can't make jokes anymore?! "

And the pile on happens to the person who objected because you are the kill joy. These "jokes" keep coming and the cruelty of the jokes get defended and the people they target don't. So those people leave and those shitty things passing as jokes don't get challenged any more. The jokes get "edgier" and the cycle repeats and those things which were dismissed as humor before are just taken as normal. They aren't jokes, they are just the basic buy in of ideals for the space. Challenging them is heresy.

So the jokes get more cruel and needing the conservative mindset buy in until basically all the people who are being joked about and all the people who care for them are gone. Because who is going to inhabit a space where you get routinely told that you don't matter?
