When I first got onto the site that shall not be named, while poking around in it I found that community fairly fast. I never participated due to the fact that I never needed it, but I also didn't really have the extra cash to send a pizza to anyone as well. But I always thought it was such a genuine gesture of people on the internet, to just send a shitty domino's pizza to someone who possibly was struggling and make their day/dinner a little better through a bit of generosity.

Does anyone else have a similar niche community that actually had an impact on peoples lives in a fairly positive way?

Thinking about how they killed Secret Santa makes me sad. There were a few cool years.

I got a sweet plasma ball and bunch of American snacks out of the Secret Santa, really wish it kept going.

I originally joined reddit for the secret santa, it's tragic how effectively the entire site is being ruined.

There was also a randomactsofblowjob, and arandomactsofpegging

Why the fuck am I only finding out about this now? I'd have been giving out all kinds of random blowjobs!

You were a-head of your time!

I’ll see myself out.

God damn, leave it to the internet to do this kinda shit. Sounds like a quick way to get an STD. Different strokes for different folks I guess hahaha.

I remember. I never participated. But I remember. Does it not exist anymore?

There's also r/millionairemakers. Same community spirit of giving, with a chance of winning.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago

I haven't even opened that site since I came on lemmy barring some Hearthstone quest trading, so I really don't know if it exists any more and in whatever capacity if it does.

Totally forgot about millionairemakers tho, I did see that one as a bit more active through the years and found the concept pretty awesome.

I like the idea of food over money, though. It's kind of my same approach when helping the homeless. I'm sure it was a moderated space to make sure the cash got to the person it was intended for but there is much more room for malicious intent with a wad of cash than sending a pizza to someone.

millionaire makers is a nice concept, the only problem is I think very few people actually pay into it. The winners every month don't actually get much money.

It’s not quite what you were asking, but in the same spirit. The website Lasagna Love helped me during a dark time. I’ve since enjoyed returning the favor. Really awesome people.

Nah, you got the vibe right. Awesome to know there's a whole website dedicated to this, and lasagna....

I remember vaguely; doesn't the recipient have to give out their address to someone who's going to "send them a pizza" though for it to work or is there a way to "sponsor a pizza" through chains so some rando on the web doesn't have an address and username?

[-] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

You could always have ordered it for pickup, the address end of it does seem a bit sketchy.

[-] [email protected] 0 points 9 months ago

I mean whats the worst that could happen when you post your address online, random shit in the mail? No one posting for a free pizza is gonna have anything worth coming to steal usually.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I believe it started that way but they largely moved to giftcards for both privacy and logistics reasons.

I used Random Acts of Pizza once and have been a fan ever since. Sometimes a Little Sleazers can make someone's day.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago

Haven’t encountered such a community, but it seems like the concept could be enlarged to include daily acts of other things: hamburgers, beer, dog treats, etc.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

I like this train of thought.
