I hate fishing. I don't understand why, in many games beyond survival ones, they feel the need to add fishing. It's usually a very simple mini game with no challenge to it, very repetitive and boring. There is little to no improvement made to the mechanic from one game to the next, it's a lazy feature void of any interesting gameplay. I can see that some people do seem to enjoy it, and ask for it in games that don't have it and eventually add it to keep their community happy. I either ignore it completely if there is no requirement to use it, or despise it when it becomes a requirement to make decent food or unlock anything else. To add insult to injury, they often have different locations and times for a variety of fish to catch, which makes the whole grind exponentially annoying.

See, I love fishing in most games because it gives me a outlet I can zone out with when I want to play the game to be social with friends, but don't really have the energy or motivation to play the main game play loop.
Good point on the different times and places issue. Oh, and the game won't explain it, so you have to guess this or look at the wiki. Why do I have to keep reading the manual when playing the game?!
Gotta be real, the grind for sure. If the basic survival mechanics begin to feel like a grind rather than adding to the atmosphere, I feel like you've kinda fumbled your survival game design.
It's the difference between gathering food feeling meaningful in Don't Starve vs. feeling like it's tacked on in Minecraft survival mode, or even further, in No Man's Sky's survival-lite normal mode settings.
