The $1 million Power Spots Project will see the stands rolled out at 15 key transport hubs.

“Initially there will be 18 phone chargers at 15 locations across the Sydney network

Starting small, but going to do more.

The article words it a bit like it will be considered a public service. I like that. Kind of how the toilets at train stations are a bit like a public service, aimed at the general community more than just train users (albeit they put them behind the ticket barriers, but at least with an opal card it's easy to enter & exit for zero cost).

It's interesting that they're providing the USB A/C sockets (and therefore built-in chargers). It's certainly more convenient to begin with, but if they're not properly vandalproof then they'll end up worse than ordinary powerpoints. The devil will be in the detail.

I know the cables officeworks has at their print self serve machines are quite durable. Not a clue what the cables are made of, but they do seem to be really resillient

It doesn't sound like they'll be offering cables, just charging outlets.

(Nonetheless: noted, thankyou. Out of curiosity I'll check them out next time I'm at officeworks)

We have these in melb too, they're an absolute godsend if your phone does while you're out and about

https://www.cbdnews.com.au/free-phone-chargers-at-cbd-stations/

Unfortunately the ferals trashed them

https://web.archive.org/web/20220112023527/https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/s1uy6f/a_free_mobile_phone_charging_station_at_flinders/

Which led to us removing them from a few stations

They will be vandalised, but most forms of public infrastructure end up getting vandalised sooner or later. I hope you guys don't make the same mistake in trying to get rid of them. You never need them until you do, and when you do you'll be grateful it's there

That looks like multiple layers of different people vandalising it? I guess they didn't take action after the first vandalism, which then leads to a "house with broken window" problem over succeeding weeks. People don't respect something that looks already tagged and broken.

Using archive.org for reddit: I sense you have a poor opinion of its stability into the future :)

Probably the case, we seem to do that a lot in melb. Unless something is actively reported, or there's a contractual obligation for it to be removed in a certain timeframe, graffiti and vandalism tends to just sit there gradually attracting more and more tags until someone gets upset about it and reports it

And kinda, I mainly just don't like Reddit and would rather not send people there (but that was the only pic I could find, and stealing it and reupping seems disrespectful)
