Birds have gizzards aka crops. They need to eat rocks to be able to break down food. Humans chew food with their teeth. In a bird that step happens in the gizzard. The rocks grind the food so the intestines can absorb nutrients.

The easiest way to get rocks is to pick them from the side of the road.

sorry I just see all these paint chips every day on my commute and was stuck in traffic so decided to take a picture, its just crazy to me how much paint chunks there is
