Toyota 2017: "solid state batteries are 3-5 years away"

Toyota 2020: "solid state batteries are 3-5 years away"

Toyota 2023: "solid state batteries are 3-5 years away"

People who are capable of pattern recognition, what do you think will be the status of Toyota's solid state batteries in 2026?

Wasn't toyota in 2020 more like: EV's are actually bad and have to go.?

As with most future tech, I'll be excited when I see it in an IRL purchasable device and it's costs, benefits, and drawbacks are known and overall a step up over current tech.

I'll be more interested once Toyota makes a real EV. They have some great hybrids but their only EV so far, the bZ6bjfAFmNl337 is... let's be polite and say "not competitive in the current marketplace".

Step 1: make an EV people might actually want.
Step 2: try to get people to buy it.

Skipping step 1 is a bad idea.

Well, traditionally they would then hold up their EV which isn't selling as proof that there's no market for EVs, but that doesn't really work when they're losing marketshare to other EVs.

I'll believe it when they ship it.

I'm excited. But I'm also very sceptical. News like this will not affect my purchasing decisions unless they can actually show they've overcome the problems with solid state.

I figure if all this tech is true then I'll be able to buy a small range extending battery for my current EV soon

It's not unlike Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown.
