Francisco Josè De Goya y Lucientes was a Spanish romantics painter and printmaker and was considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the late 18th and early 19th century. The Witches' Sabbath is 1 of 14 paintings known as the black paintings, the most famouse of which is known as "Saturn devouring his son", and all 14 paintings were painted on top of other paintings as well as on the bare walls of his home, being a reflection of Goyas deterioration, both physically and mentally, and also shows his worsening view of humanity. Themes of religion, famine, war, cruelty, and possible fleeting love are present in his paintings.
