Hello everyone,

I’m wondering about whats your go-to brand for smart home devices and why?

I am Interested in reliability, ease of use, and how well they work with Home Assistant. Would love to hear your recommendations and experiences.

Thanks!

Aqara P2 Thread Motion/Light Sensor package contents

Hi all,

For anyone interested, I disassembled and tested the new Aqara P2 Thread Motion/Light sensor.

The device features a very wide detection angle of 170° at a distance of maximum 7 meters. It integrates easily in a Home Assistant Thread network (I used the Sonoff ZBDongle-E as a border router) and operates completely locally and without delays.

The P2 is almost identical to the previous Zigbee version (P1), with the only notable difference being the Thread radio. Size, batteries, PIR capability is completely the same. However, settings like sensitivity and relay cannot be set at the moment (Matter limitation) on this new P2 version.

Here's my deep-dive with details for anyone interested: Aqara P2 Thread Motion/Light Sensor Review

TLDR: Has excellent range, wide detection angle and works great over Thread in Home Assistant, but exposes no setting/adjustment clusters (Matter limitation). If you have the P1 (Zigbee) or similar, there's no need to replace it IMHO.

I'm looking for a beside device for our guests to control key HA features of the room/house (good night/morning button, temperature, bedroom/hallway lights).

Wishlist for this device:

  • can show a Lovelace dashboard.
  • dims properly at night (like Google Nest, most tablets too strong brightness still)
  • is intuitive to wake up (like Google Nest just tap, no double taps or power button)
  • runs Fully Kiosk or sth similar
  • is easy to set up/install
  • no camera (but ideally sensor for light/movement detection)

Some sub par solutions I found so far:

  • Lenovo Smart Clock 2. Must be hacked (making some native buttons less intuitive), screen on the small side (lowres), otherwise perfect form factor.
  • Google Nest Hub. Screen perfect, streaming Lovelace not stable, using native home control too limited (and requires swiping from the top, which people may not know)
  • Lenovo Tablet with dock. Has camera and needs it for movement detection, requires double tap when screen is off (not intuitive for everyone), too bright if screen stays on with Fully Kiosk (to avoid double tap).

Any suggestions would be great!

I'm wondering how you guys keep comfort high compared to keys... ... When out for 5 minutes only ... When neighbour is supposed to get in ... Etc

Are smart garage openers better in every way or just specific use cases, eg when you usually only open it from the car

Posting here to raise awareness and in case folks feel moved to provide feedback to Volvo.

Some months ago, supposedly as part of a planned switchover to a new API, Volvo suddenly stopped providing API access to vehicles in North America. The API (and dependent Home Assistant integration) are still working for vehicles in other regions of the world, but not in North America. They just say they are "working on" restoring it - since last year ...

Folks on the HA Community forum are discussing this (and more to do with the integration) here.

If you're experiencing inconvenience due to this decision by Volvo, or if you just care about open access to data and/or companies not selling products (in this case, a $80K car) and then removing important functionality, please consider reaching out to Volvo via email, social media, or some other way. Consider telling them that you think they should restore API access to North American vehicles.

Thanks!

Edit: Miscalculated, it would be 60 meters to start (12 * 5m).

WLED effects are changing the entire look of my house. I mounted addressable LEDs around the perimeter near the ceiling, under cabinets, island, coffee table, couch. I typically run them at low levels to create a more subtle effect, but the coffee table at full brightness is like being next to a fire pit. (I'm kind of surprised we don't do interior design with LEDs in mind.)

But I wonder if there are any use cases I haven't thought of. Right now I'm just making presets for different lighting conditions in the house. What have you done with addressable LEDs?

As the title suggests, what are some AC models that you use and work well with HA? I have in mind wall air conditions with separate outdoor unit, which typically have some wifi connectivity, but I had a hard time to find "reliable" info on the HA integration.

Please also name the integration (if native, or if you needed tweaks, like ESPHome) you needed, to make it work.

Edit: thanks to all for posting, I see many options here.

I'm what you might (charitably) call "chronically disorganised" - so I'm leaning into using Home Assistant to try help get myself in order!

I've built a little "leaving the house" (and "coming back home") type dashboard that I get to by tapping an NFC tag I leave by the front door.

Current version is below, with the following entities:

  • A checklist (with basic things like: do you have your wallet?)
  • The weather (so that I can see if I need an umbrella / am dressed appropriately)
  • A button card that triggers a "leaving home" scene (it turns everything off)
  • Finally, a widget that controls Alarmo

Like this (sidebar theme is because I'm accessing it on mobile):

Would love to hear if anyone else is using such a setup and if so what you have on your dashboards!

But not how you expect it

Setup : TS011F (chinese zigbee plug, rated for 3600w) with Z2M / 1400w electric heater

At 1am, the temperature dropped below 17°C, the generic thermostat turned on the plug but the plug did not report the ON state. When the temperature went above 19°C, the thermostat had no plug to turn off, since it was "already off".

You see where this is going, 7 hours later I wake up with temperature higher than the maximum we get during summer : 27°C.

I was able to turn it off again by toggling it twice.

I'm pretty sure I lost weight due to sweat and I'll lose hair trying to figure out how to make sure it does not happen anymore. This happens very short of 3 years without any smart home incident. What a shame.

As the title says. I'm looking to put up about 10-15 smart bulbs around my house, but I don't know what system to go with. They need to be RGBW and at least 1100 lumens, but I can settle for 800 lumens for lamps. I want something that doesn't use wifi. I'm going to buy a Home Assistant Green to start with.

UPDATE: Looks like I'm going with Hue, thanks for all the input!

Original Title: I live in Egypt and crime is getting worse due to economic collapse. Currently have 8 cheap IP cameras connected to an NVR which has awful software. How do I upgrade this setup to get good intruder detection and phone notifications? I also have a spare 2012 MacBookPro lying around. Would that help?

A few years ago we caught a burglar in our home. After that incident, we made a panic buy and a friend of a friend basically bought and installed everything for us and we just paid them for their service. He got us 8 IP cameras along with a 16 channel NVR all from the same no-name brand. For some reason, the NVR allows only 2 of those cameras to use the "smart" feature where I draw a perimeter line and the NVR will make a beep if someone crosses it. However, that feature barely works, and almost always gives a false alarm for cars passing by due to their headlights. Detecting humans though? Forget about it. Seriously, this software is outdated and borderline useless.

Anyways, I was wondering if I could use some other better software on the NVR or even my spare macbook that would work with my cameras? My main concern is if my 8 IP cameras would work with the software, considering they're a no name brand. To be fair to them they've worked quite well for a few years now and haven't broken down. But that's besides the point.

I am essentially wondering if I can take my current 8 ip cameras and combine it with better software (either through my current NVR or my spare MacBook, whatever possible) that will have great detection features for all 8 cameras and would send me mobile notifications when Im away. I'd prefer it to only use the internet when it's sending me a notification with the footage, because internet over here is limited.
