thankfully the vibes are good, and i'm a sucker for seeing a thriller where the cops are arguing with the suits and have to go on a boat ride in the fog, because in the monologue-y bits i just kept going "uhuh, yep. that's true. yep, that's true. peace in the imperial core IS propped up by violence elsewhere that will inevitably blow back on the core somehow. the fall of the soviet union DID leave the imperial core thinking it was the end of history when that was obviously bullshit. i KNOW japan is a client state of america and i have a good idea of the jsdf's complex role there where it's a "self defense force" but is still effectively a major military and contributes to global hegemony. yep. uhuh. going to say anything new to me before before we get back to the plot? are you going to do anything involving the characters or themes or tone of the show/movie patlabor? no?"

still good, though the first one was way better. imagine if a patlabor movie that included noa izumi, main character of patlabor, as a character! that'd be so crazy

a: if the rights holders had wanted to they 100% had grounds to sue, and they would have probably won

b: the getter emperor is so cool! and someone should have told the people at gainax "if you're going to do getter emperor, the manifestation of colonialism and genocide as the natural extremes of directionless shonen hotblooded spirit and humanities endless potential for evolution, you need a stronger argument than "nuh uh" when saying 'actually this is a good thing. it's good to forever grow and become more powerful and kill everything in your way'"

if i ever rewatch it i'm not going to be able to see team gurren as anything other than evil. seeing kittan's sacrifice and shaking my head like "he succumbed to the corruption of the getter. sad!"

or maybe i'm wrong and it has a satisfying response that goes beyond "actually i'd just be chill about this whole thing," but i really don't remember that

he helped create homeland security, was a big part of the push to invade iraq, and got public health insurance removed from obamacare

and just generally was a huge piece of shit the democrats used to make sure nothing good happened while they had control of the legislature

describing their death as them dying "one day after getting into a physical fight with several other students at Owasso High School" without any further mention of it, when that fight was them being ganged up on after a year of harassment and resulted in nex blacking out partway through the fight is journalistic malpractice

Kiara Alfonseca is a journalist and producer who covers the topics of education, policing, economic and social injustice through the lens of identity.

GREAT FUCKING JOB ON THAT KIARA

absolutely disgusting. even if they did kill themself (which, given other examples of malpractice from the authorities surrounding this case and the claimed cause of death not really matching up there is more than a little reason to doubt), the refusal to put any blame on the year long transphobic harassment campaign or the brutal attack they suffered the day before where they blacked out partway through is appalling. deeply evil reporting

i'm still bitter about the whole 'playing into trap jokes' thing he was doing for a while but i hope she's doing well, i wish em luck and hope ze's grown

movies where the main villain is a man who controls all the cars and is ultimately killed by women once they manage to break his car monopoly are the best

"Did you look at the alleged cp" is NOT a good strategy.

ok so shinzo abe, the former prime minister of japan had a reputation in some english speaking anime circles as a man obsessed with japan's birthrate (which is obviously a very fascist thing to be obsessed with) that started when wild stuff like darling in the franxx got made. there were a couple shows that had major plot threads about people learning the great power of heterosexual marriage and sex and procreation. so people made memes about him secretly sponsoring anime to try and get the youth to fuck without birth control. he was a conservative politician who definitely cared about the birthrate but this became his defining trait among some weebs, and every time an anime came out that had a cute kid in it people accused him of having his fingers on it.

when he died people had a field day with it as it related to this, and the pictured meme is a reference to cowboy bebop. it's like an in memoriam thing for him, where he's telling the viewer to have sex in reference to the popular perception of him. naturally if you aren't in western anime spaces that were constantly making jokes about "imma be real with you 57th prime minister of japan shinzo abe, this will not solve japan's declining birth rate" every new anime season when a show showed a happy family it would make no sense. this does include japanese people, who seem very confused by this long trail of memes about the former prime minister of japan

The Department of State today is announcing the designation of Ansarallah, commonly referred to as the Houthis, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group, effective 30 days from today.

Since November, the Houthis have launched unprecedented attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, as well as military forces positioned in the area to defend the safety and security of commercial shipping.  These attacks against international shipping have endangered mariners, disrupted the free flow of commerce, and interfered with navigational rights and freedoms.  This designation seeks to promote accountability for the group’s terrorist activities.  If the Houthis cease their attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the United States will reevaluate this designation.

The Houthis must be held accountable for their actions, but it should not be at the expense of Yemeni civilians.  As the Department of State moves forward with this designation, we are taking significant steps to mitigate any adverse impacts this designation may have on the people of Yemen.  During the 30-day implementation delay, the U.S. government will conduct robust outreach to stakeholders, aid providers, and partners who are crucial to facilitating humanitarian assistance and the commercial import of critical commodities in Yemen.  The Department of the Treasury is also publishing licenses authorizing certain transactions related to the provision of food, medicine, and fuel, as well as personal remittances, telecommunications and mail, and port and airport operations on which the Yemeni people rely.

god these motherfuckers. holding ansarallah accountable for trying to do anything to work against an active genocide

this definitely isn't more or less the exact argument transphobes make to try and take our rights away but with an extra level of online poisioning

[-] [email protected] 72 points 8 months ago

cool! love to be accused of pretending to be trans, something that definitely isn't mostly leveraged against trans women to accuse them of just being men trying to enter women's spaces!
