I wanted to chat about Dune 2, but the pinned thread over at [email protected] from 13 days ago wasn't federated to this server.

I wound up replying from my lemmy.ml account as a workaround.

Newer posts from [email protected] have been federated as normal.

The movie was excellent. Miles above the Sci Fi channel version. Atmospheres above David Lynch.

I haven't watched the SciFi Channel version yet. It does get recommended a lot.

Lynch's Dune has a lot going for it: The visual design of the ships, and flapters, and in particular the Navigators Guild guys, how much he emphasized the preciousness of water on Arrakis, the assassin probe scene is great, and then there's that Mentat mantra.

It is goofy in many respects though: The Alia subplot doesn't work at all, the part of the battle where the space royals are sitting on their periscopes firing weapons, Gurney Halleck is pointless, Sting was awful as Feyd, Chani is useless (which is true to the books IIRC)

It did have one hell of a large budget so it definitely did visuals way better than sci Fi channel but it cut down this massive story into just over 2 hours so an unacceptable amount of cuts were made just to fit the cliff notes into a film.
