Do you fertilize your lawn? Too much high nitrogen fertalizer on a hydrangea will make them look like yours - lush with no buds.
I think I put some thing like a weed and feed down in April but only one application. Any advice on correcting this at least in the future? Just keep any fertilizer away? Supplement with something different?

You need a soil acidification as well as a very low nitrogen fertilizer such as Flower Fuel 1-34-32.

Mine look exactly the same and I've given them nothing but water.
I really cut them back end of last season, they were out of control.
Cutting them back before they bud, stops them from blooming. Watch a short video on pruning them to see exactly how prune and still get flowers.
