I'm surprised they never encountered a race that had legs that bent the other way and just have an awkward moment where the human crew can't figure out how to sit in the chairs of the alien conference room.
Meanwhile Riker would just waltz in and sit like a god king, ready to discuss them joining the federation.
Out-of-universe, it probably wouldn't work well for center of mass with respect to the direction of vision.
