I've built multiple amplifiers from scratch, both tube and transistor based. But go off.
Good for you, awesome! Have you stress tested your circuits with corrosion to see what may or may not fail first?
http://repairfaq.org/
Nobody asked you what you could build from fresh scratch, I'm asking you what you'd do with electronics that have 15+ years of salt water vapor damage...?
Yes, I have experience with old electronics as well, and guitars, repair work, the whole lot. And I have an bs in EE.
But none of that matters because what is really happening here is that you are wrong, and instead of learning and moving on with a better understanding, you are tripling down and pulling the wool over your own eyes.
And you and all of your friends are dismissing safety. Fuck all that, I respect safety and always have. You've got mains going into the amp, the cable going into the guitar, and metal wires on the fingers. Oh, don't forget about the metal whammy bar...
Although the risk of electrocution is minimal, it still exists. My folks had a rule to not fuck around with sketchy equipment. What the fuck is your deal with cleaning and maintaining a goddamn guitar?
Dude just take the L for your own sake.
Multiple EEs have now told you you’re wrong. You just keep doubling down and outing yourself as being even more wrong.
Or keep going. I don’t really care it’s good entertainment either way, it’s just super cringey for you.
Lol. Nobody is saying to not maintain a guitar, wtf. What a wild stretch. You must be defensive.
They are just saying that you are wrong that a rusty/shorted pickup is some serious safety risk. Because it is not, and you are acting self-righteous, ill-informed, and paranoid.
Yeah, and the guitar only has 5 of 6 strings, and some nitwit asked how it sounds...
Get real, lemme ask you how a 6 cylinder engine would sound with a dead cylinder. Lemme ask you how a motorcycle would drive with a broken spoke or two...
Nothing that relies on timing is gonna sound right without proper maintenance. I mean goddamn, at least WD-40 the existing strings and tune them first, how TF anyone gonna judge the sound of a corroded guitar without a basic checkup and cleanup?
What the fuck are you talking about. Did you forget your point?
No, I did not forget my point. I'm referring back to the start of my points, which all basically add up to inspect, clean, and repair the thing before hooking it up to any device connected to mains electricity.
You never specified mains electricity until it was convenient for your point.
Nobody’s refuting that guitar maintenance is a good thing, but it’s hilarious to see you sticking to that part of it so as not to directly address the part where you were wrong about getting electrocuted by a guitar.
Electrocution = the death or severe injury caused by an electric shock.
You either misused the word because you don’t understand what it means, or you were wrong about getting electrocuted by a guitar because you don’t know what you’re talking about. Which one?
I've been electrocuted over 20 times in my life. There's no obligation that one has to perish for it to actually qualify as electrocution.
This is a consequence I've had to accidentally suffer multiple times to know what the fuck I'm talking about.
Meanwhile, shared from another user in the thread: https://youtube.com/watch?v=xS_5K5YEYv8
That isn’t a brag. I’ve joined the 240 club once.
The guitar also has closed back pickups. So say OP takes them out, how will they see the coils? You have no clue what you are talking about.
Have you joined the 20K volt club? I have, multiple times, I used to repair CRT and projection set televisions. Ever been popped by a flyback transformer?...
They measure the voltage by the inches of the spark. You want your heart jump started? 240 club is almost a joke, except that I hear 240 makes your muscles clinch up.. ☹️
You don't see the coils to find issues nitwit, you use a multimeter and/or an oscilloscope. Shit can and definitely does fail internally where your eyes can't see.
That's the whole reason they make advanced testing equipment. pLEaSE sToP BOthErINg mE!
“I know what the fuck I’m talking about.”
But you don’t, that’s the thing.
So you misused the term for dramatic effect, or you didn’t know the meaning behind it, but either way you are currently making a different argument than your original claim, rather than just admit you make a mistake, go to bed, and try to do better tomorrow.
Also, you just misused the term again
"or severely injure"
Yes, please don't try to tell me how many times I've been electrocuted by over 20,000 volts.
And how many of those 20,000 volts were a direct result of a guitar rather than ungrounded equipment connected to a guitar?
Do I need to link the definition for “severe injury”?
No, I have enough diagnosed brain damage already, thank you.
Evidently.
So you wonder why I'd rather play things safe now? Like I dunno, clean everything first before plugging it up?..
Actually, I wonder why you’re focusing on the cleaning aspect of this whole thread because literally nobody here cares about that, that’s not what you’re wrong about.
What you’re wrong about is an old dirty guitar electrocuting you because it’s old and dirty.
Outside is corroded from years of humidity means inside is corroded from years of humidity as well. How much? Who the hell knows? Fuckit, let's just plug it up and cross our fingers...
Or maybe, just maybe, use a little lick of sense and at least open it up and look inside first. Fuck, at least look first, not like it's rocket science to use a Phillips screwdriver to open the cover...
Looking first isn’t what you’re wrong about, the electrocution part is what you’re wrong about.
When I see corrosion, I don't trust where electricity goes. This is just common fucking sense to anyone that understands squat about electricity and values their life.
Hell, even if the outside of the thing is perhaps only 3% corroded, the inside could be 33% corroded...
Nobody knows unless they at least inspect it to start with. I mean hell, I've dealt with flooded cars before, you know how many of those are outright deceiving and totally ruined internally and go to scrap?
It's not hard to check inside of a guitar though. Is there something wrong with at least checking and cleaning it up first, inside and out?
Now you’re just going in circles, rather than admit you were wrong. Specifically about the electrocution part.

No, you did. And now you are trying to downplay the original argument.
That's good. It means you can learn and move on. If you aren't just a troll.
Can I buy you and boba a beer?
No. But a whiskey with ice and water would be lovely!
