It's more a case of supporting 10 year old hardware, maintaining the drivers to work with new software. As far as I've been able to find, there is no mention to lock them into the $current ChromeOS.
Still not fun, but damnit my Linux kernel can still load ISA drivers, and it's been 25 years since I've used one of those.
