It can. USB C can support DP ALT mode where the pins effectively become DP pins in a USB C connector. I'm guessing data transfer is done via USB2 this and display is in DP ALT. Typically we've not seen this as anyone willing to put in ALT modes would want a fast interface too for data transfer, also knowing apple there is something proprietary going on.

The main point is it's not limited to USB Speeds. The pins can take on other functions. Even the pro does 10gbps USB where as 4k60 HDR in DP would be 14-20gbps far in excess of it's USB bandwidth.

Even older versions of dp have more than 10gbps
