well my first base was just on whatever random planet I was on when I decided to finally give it a go, I made some storage chests and everything so its pretty nice, but then I ran out of materials. now Im on a planet that has aluminum so that seems more useful to build another base but I dont have enough resources to actually build anything yet haha

The way its supposed to work (I assume) is you build a bunch of bases on different planets for gathering different resources automatically. You then have them shipped to another location. There's no way to sort incoming items though and no way to automatically clear items, so you'll end up clogging up and having to remove junk though. It's not ideal.
