What's going on with the chain between the chain ring and the lower derailer? Looks like a guide to reorient the chain, but why?

I guess there's a minor benefit for increasing the contact point between chain and chainring, reducing stress on chainring and likehood of the chain falling off. I guess you can also run a longer chain, so that it's easier to repair on the way without carrying extra links with you
