Back in the day I used to really like browsing soundcloud, listening to mashups, indie artists, and whatnot. Eventually soundcloud got too big and took down a lot of content (probably due to copyright) and introduced paid "pro" accounts. Is there a place like the early soundcloud on the fediverse?

It got taken down because there was so much licensed music uploaded to it, I believe

Federation, probably harder for music labels to go after so many instances?

I think the opposite. Most of the instances are closed/invite only, so there's no way to know if there's any improperly licensed music there. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
