And my wife was just recently talking about buying a printer. Is there a company that is not an asshole?

Get a Brother toner printer.

Seconding Brother. You'll pay more up front for a laser printer (and Brother makes a good affordable one), but you'll save ridiculous amounts of money on ink (toner).

Thanks, I was leaning towards that brand for no particular reason. I’ll be happy to avoid having to buy ink.

I haven't had any issues with my Canon Color ImageClass. It even prints when it tells you the ink is low. For a very very long time.

But whenever this topic came up, folks would recommend Brother or Canon. Just make sure that you're getting a Laser printer and not an inkjet of some kind, and obviously, look up what people are saying about the model.
