It's even worse than that
One new modern belief is that if someone does a terrible, disgusting or evil thing and gets away with it, then they believe that God allowed them to do these things ... that it was part of God's plan to allow certain people to get away with doing terrible things.
Also, if a person grows wealthy, powerful and influential even though they may have done terrible things or don't even follow moral laws to get there ... then God is rewarding them and wants them to be there because that is part of the plan.
God wants these things to happen and God wants these people in power and these people to have all the money because that is part of his plan.
So either
This world is screwed because personally I believe it's the last option and everyone knows it but no one wants to admit it. The believers will hold out hope until their last breathe, hoping to see the gates of heaven when they close their eyes. And the non-believers will take advantage of everyone else knowing there is nothing so you might as well enjoy whatever time and power you have now in this life.
I think there are quite a few belief systems that have an explanation for how there could be a benevolent god and suffering in this world. But that doesn't take away from your point that a lot of people use positions of power in religious institutions to commit heinous acts. It's a bigger problem because faith systems make it harder to call out leaders.
