I was born and raised in northern mn. I remember winters when it hit -40. So cold it seemed the world operated on a slightly different set of parameters. Metal became brittle. Liquid fuels became solid. Trees would explode in the night as the sap finally froze. So trust when I say forget the gimmicks, the dodgy heating schemes.

Layers is the way. Wear dress socks under regular socks under big old wollies. Wear a T-shirt under a long sleeve under a collared under a sweatshirt. You catch my drift. Anything beyond the occasional chemical mitten warmer packet thingys is suspect at best.

I grew up in a place that didn't get cold. The boiling water freezing in air was wild to me.

TREES EXPLODE?!

EDIT: O_O

Damn, that's scary. We had an ice storm in Ohio some 20 years ago and I remember listening to trees explode all night. We ended up with a pile of brush as big as our two story house! It took years of bonfires to burn it all off.
