People don't know that the falls were effectively damned a hundred years ago. The horseshoe Falls are basically just the spillway for the hydro and pumped storage reservoirs.

Fun fact: here in Ontario we call all power “hydro” because of this. You don’t get the power/electricity bill each month, you get the “hydro bill”.
