There's so much stuff that takes up storage on the main drive, like photo libraries etc. I know far too many people who always struggle with full drives and it's just not feasible for the average user to move stuff to an external drive constantly

Fair enough. It certainly benefits Apple if people with full photo libraries instead move those to iCloud with costly subscriptions.
