Ballot drop boxes have morphed into vessels for emotion, suspicion and conspiracy theories. In Wisconsin, their mere presence has inspired community leaders to reject them or call on people to watch them 24/7. A mayor even hijacked one.

Per the last paragraph, the argument is not about a box. It's about the right to vote. It's about fighting back against Republican attempts to suppress the vote, and to make the voting system itself illegitimate.

Ballot boxes are relatively inexpensive, and easy to secure and monitor. They are easy to use and help more people vote. Republicans hate that because it means they don't always win and that makes democracy corrupt. That belief is what's really corrupt.
