Hello new Lemmy friends!
Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.
The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.
Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.
We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

I have a legitimate question: what is with the obsession? It's one shallow Instagram model who's full of herself and pretends to be all natural when she isn't. There are hundreds like her. I don't get it.
Well for starters, this particular Instagram model (thebirdspapaya or TBP) built her entire platform on being so-called “body positive”. She has made millions lying to people and has triggered other people’s body dysmorphia with her actions, including pre/teenage girls. TBP has been credibly accused of plagiarism and stealing from BIPOC creators. She has co-opted conditions such as Pre-menstrual Dysphoric Disorder to warrant sympathy whenever she’s feeling low due to being called out (her symptoms mysteriously disappear otherwise). Recently TBP pretended she had a breast cancer scare when it was just a routine follow up that hundreds of women go through every day. TBP frequently uses her children for content, including a preschool aged daughter and another (newly) adult daughter who has said she does not want to be featured on her page. TBP also goes to great measures to silence any criticism against her, no matter how constructive. The reason why we are here is because she shut down the aforementioned subreddit page although we didn’t break any rules. Many of us only found the subreddit in the first place because she blocked us (I personally was blocked on IG for liking a comment on a collaborator’s post that simply stated TBP looked different on her own page). TBP enlists her inner circle and brands she collaborates with in silencing people, even companies like Women’s Health Magazine and Reitman’s. It makes one wonder what she has to hide. Finally, TBP attempted to bully Janette Ewen, a lifestyle journalist into silence by serving her with a bs cease and desist letter. Janette ignored it as the filtering and plagiarism is easily proven.
While we mostly talk about TBP here (as it is her new snark page), we recognize the issue is with influencing as a whole. Many of us are members of other snark pages on Reddit where we talk about other influencers and their harmful actions. If influencing is a job (according to these women), why are they above criticism? Consider this TBP’s personal Yelp page where former “customers” can provide feedback (in case you didn’t know, thebirdspapaya is a corporation and she is the CEO). While some of the posts are petty know that most of us are working towards something greater, ideally a world where influencers are better regulated (currently there is exceedingly little keeping them in check).
Wow that's very interesting thanks. So she's like a complete psychopath.
Np! She may have been a decent person once but the money and fame clearly went to her head. Seems to happen a lot unfortunately.
