In no way is frunk a word for front trunk please please god

[–] [email protected] 21 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Yes, that's been the term for a front storage compartment since at least the 1970s.

TIL. It's not a common term here. We call the trunk the boot, and front storage is exceedingly rare so that I've never encountered a car with it. I guess frunk will catch on in the absence of a 'froot'

Yeah, front storage went away for a while when air cooling faded away and rear-engined cars became exclusively rich guy sportscars. Now that EVs are becoming more common, most of them have a little storage compartment under the hood or bonnet, so frunk is becoming a more popular term again.

I think tailgate is still the correct term even where the rear storage is the boot, but I've heard it more colloquially called a "boot lid"

Ah yeah see, without learning the word frunk I would have said bonnet storage or just bonnet, then I read your other comment saying that the bonnet is the metal flap, so that's another TIL!

Tailgate in Australia means to drive up someone's arse/not keep the safe distance between you and the driver in front, I'm guessing deriving from that they're on your tailgate. Interesting stuff, thanks.

Yep! North Americans also call driving too close (and partying out of the back of ones car as one might pregame outside a sporting event) tailgating for the same reason: proximity to the vehicle's tailgate.

Frbtoootnoont.

I reckon you'd still call it a boot, I don't see why the name has to change because it's in a different spot on the car

literally just put Hood wtf is wrong with these ppl

[–] [email protected] 16 points 7 months ago

The hood or bonnet is the foldy uppy piece of metal in the front, the tailgate is the one in the back. The trunk or frunk is the storage compartment under that piece of metal.

This isn't a 21st century techbro term invented for Teslas, it's been in somewhat common usage since at least the 70s when rear-engined air-cooled VWs and Porsches were still common.
