Even though I've searched and searched for a solution for self hosting my ebook library (epub and pdf) AND having sync progress on iOS devices, I couldn't find anything that can do this. Right now I'm using Calibre web just for library management (no syncing features). I've tried Kavita (good for comic series but pretty bad for single books, especially pdf and metadata).

Ebook managing and syncing is the only thing that I can't find a way to self host. I was using Google Books which was working flawlessly for syncing and having all your books in one place but I'm moving away from Google (I got the self hosting virus).

Thank you in advance for your help and have a great 2025!

Hi all,

I am currently hosting a couple simple web services on a VPS using Traefik and Portainer. I got a plan with Hostinger a year ago, after the support at Strato failed me hard and left my VPS unreachable for 24 hours after some service crashed, not even able to restart it. I am realizing now that my plan is coming to an end, that the price is going to be almost double! I really don't need that many resources, and so I just want to find the cheapest, yet reliable VPS provider, and reading this subreddit many people do not seem to be a fan of Hostinger. Hence my two questions:

  • What is the cheapest, yet somewhat reliable VPS provider, I am located in NL, but if the latency is low for providers in Germany or some other country, that is also fine (I am not very experienced with this stuff).
  • How can I migrate my docker containers (with all volumes) to this new provider, so that I don't lose any data.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi everyone, I’m using Bitwarden (cloud, free tier) as a password manager. In case of emergencies I want my wife to have access to it. I also want multi factor authentication for safety reasons. I love Bitwarden, but I don’t like the idea that I’m keeping all my secrets with a third party (who knows what happens to them).

I could save my revovery code in a physical safe in my house. But I don’t like the idea that someone could break into my house and than access my vault remotely.

I would rather backup my Bitwarden Vault locallt automatically. I have no problem with self hosting. Is there a more safe method to manage my passwords?

Four days to go before we step into 2025, and we thought we'll share a collection of the most recommended and loved self-hosted tools from our community.

https://www.osswire.com/r-selfhosted-recommends-essential-self-hosted-tools-of-2024/

Compared to most lists, this one’s powered by posts, comments, and conversations right here in r/selfhosted. It is also vetted and reviewed by us and almost all of those we have tired ourselves.

Check it out and let us know what’s missing. We will use comments here to make that list even better for everyone.

We shared this yesterday, but took it down after some of you caught a few errors (thanks for the sharp eyes!). We've gone through all the feedback and made the necessary corrections. Thanks for helping make this resource better.

Happy holidays!

I currently have a dedicated server from Hetzner I want to get rid of (specs are i7-8700 & 64GB RAM) so I want to build a NAS in a Fractal Design Node 804. The NAS will run Proxmox and will be virtualizing a few VMs. I have read that nowadays a QSV CPU is recommended over something like AMD + Quadro but ultimately just looking for the cheapest option. This is my build so far https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/VHZWt3 but it seems a little on the steep side.

The i7-8700 I use in my dedi is great considering it's 7 years old but it is showing its age so I'm just not sure what CPU to go for.

I don't even mind if its not a Fractal Design Node 804, its just that was the goto when I was looking at this a few years ago.

Have you ever needed to track plans, versions, suppliers, expenses etc. During a renovation? Did you use anything selfhosted for that?

I've just set up failban, it's working fine.

I used this guide:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha8NIAOsNvo

https://dbt3ch.com/books/fail2ban/page/how-to-install-and-configure-fail2ban-to-work-with-nginx-proxy-manager

And it worked perfectly. No issues at all. But damn, what a convoluted process to set up. So with this guide being a couple years old, is there a newer, easier guide? Otherwise I'll load this process into my docs.

Hey everyone, I’ve noticed that Nginx, Apache, and Caddy get recommended here all the time for web servers and reverse proxies. However, HAProxy—being straightforward to set up, lightning-fast, and widely used in production—seems less talked about.

Am I missing something? Is there a specific reason HAProxy isn’t more popular in these discussions? I’d love to hear your experiences, pros/cons, or any reasons you might avoid it.

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Hi everyone

I'm new to hosting myself, and have been between AMP and Pterodactyl.

I want to use Ptero instead of AMP, however when I make an ARK server it isn't discoverable at all...

I use AMP with the same config and I can see it ingame.

Is there something AMP does that differently? I know about the auto-firewall rules it does but the Ubuntu Server it's on has firewalls disabled..

I'd really appreciate your guys' help!

I'm using the OpenSubtitles plugin to download subtitles for movies/series, but it seems half the time the subtitles are really off. Like it shows the subtitles at the wrong time. Often I can't get it fixed by using the subtitle offset because somehow the subtitle offset changes 10 minutes later for some reason. I really need subtitles otherwise I can't understand like half of what is being said and it makes it impossible to watch anime. Anyone know how to fix this?

In a post from a few days ago I came across Soularr, and thought it warranted more attention!

With some minor configuration, slskd can now integrate directly with Lidarr. I could set it up in under an hour, and it’s a game changer to help fill the gaps in your music library

Hello

I have nextcloud installed on my ubuntu server and to use it outside of my home network i am using zerotier.

My problem is that I cannot use 2 VPNs at the same time on my mobile therefore i always have to switch back and forth between my VPN and zerotier. I read somewhere that i can use zrok to solve my problem. unfortunately i dont possess enough knowledge of linux to set it up properly, nor can i find any step by step guide explaining how to set it up .

Any help or guidance will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

A smart envelope budgeting web application that helps you save money and reach your financial goals - I was asked by a friend to share what I've been using in-house for simple budgeting. Allows for exporting/importing into CSV, and while I know there are numerous other apps - here's yet another one for free! <3

I love this community - and I hope to be around for a long time to come.

Features

  • 🎯 Smart envelope budgeting system with goal tracking
  • 💫 Interactive progress visualization
  • 🏆 Achievement system to celebrate milestones
  • 📊 Transaction history with editable entries
  • 📥 Import/Export functionality for envelope data
  • 🎨 Multiple theme options (Green, Blue, Purple, Orange)
  • 🦦 Friendly weasel mascot with savings tips
  • 📱 Responsive design for all devices
  • 💾 Local storage for data persistence
  • 🚀 Quick-add categories with recommended goals

If there's any interest in having this be a docker image - I'm able to whip that up fairly quickly.

I only picked it up because it was stupidly cheap that it could make a fun experiment. Maybe some sort of inventory management software (obvious) or another unexpected use?

We self-host for all kinds of reasons; privacy, control of our data, escaping vendor lock-in, free alternatives to paid services, to learn something new, or just for fun. But who else here self-hosts because there are no (paid) alternatives to a particular service, or if there are, they don’t offer the same features, or are just not as good? Post your best examples!

I am relatively new to self-hosting, so apologies in advance if this is the wrong subreddit to ask the question.

I currently have an old HP Compaq with an i5-2400, 16 GB of RAM, and two 2 TB 3.5" drives. I primarily use it for Plex (watching media) but also for storage (photo backups, some mods/files for games that are shared between 2 PCs, random game ISOs, etc.). It also handles some hosting for different game servers, primarily Minecraft and Assetto Corsa, so nothing heavy.

I have gotten my hands on a Lenovo m720q Tiny, for free, with an i5-8400T and 8 GB of RAM, but I am planning to upgrade it to either 16 or 32 GB. I want to replace my current setup with the m720q as it is smaller, should use way less power, and generally be more efficient.

However, I am not sure what to do with the 3.5" drives, as there is no space in the m720q or extra SATA ports.

I was planning to:

  • Buy a 4-bay DAS unit.
  • Buy an 8 TB HDD (to store all of the Plex media instead of 2 separate drives).
  • Run the two 2 TB drives in RAID for the important files.
  • Use one of my unused 2 TB drives for miscellaneous stuff.

But reading through both this subreddit and others, I see people saying that I shouldn't buy a DAS due to USB-connection issues, not being able to do RAID for some DAS units, and that I should buy a NAS instead. The issue is that a 4-bay NAS system is more expensive than a DAS unit, and I am not sure if the NAS can handle the hosting of game servers or if a NAS system is the right solution for me.

Can I get by with just buying the DAS unit and connecting it to the m720q, or is the solution really to just buy a NAS instead? I was also thinking of just selling both the m720q and the old HP Compaq to build my own "server"/enclosure with enough space for the drives, but I don't think I can match the size and power consumption of the m720q without spending way more money than I want to.

Any recommendations or solutions are welcomed.

Hi. I'm starting my self-hosting journey soon and was wondering if this app or app combination existed.

I'd love to self-host something between Paprika and Supercook where I can store recipes, but also store my current pantry, and I can automatically create a shopping list for things I don't have. Meal planning would also be nice, but I'm not as focused on it.

I've looked at a few different recipe apps (Tandoor, Mealie, etc) but it seems that they tend to have one or the other. Which is fine, and I'd be cool with hosting both if I can ultimately get to my desired endpoint. However, I'm wondering if there's any kind of process that someone's already made to get this result?

I want to get into Home Automation as well, so if it's able to be linked up to that, that'd be really cool but not strictly necessary.

Apologies for any clunky wording (I'm very new to this but working on researching more) and thanks for any help or tips that can be provided.

I used FLAME for years but it was missing the calendar integration that I wanted. I didn't want anything to fancy just the ability to have links, docker service listings, and a bunch of embedded calendars that I could tab through without the page reloading. A bonus would be a single configuration file in yaml, lightweight server, with the bare minimal number of files to edit if I want to customize anything.

So I spend this winter break and made my own. Hopefully it's of benefit to someone else, if not that's fine because it's now my default homepage and I will absolutely make use of it. On the github page I've included a docker-compose.yml that has the icon mapping and everything for use with something like CasaOS.

Hello Everyone,

Many of you have asked me several times if I plan to add Authentik to go along with my Docker and Traefik guides.

I finally added Authentik-Traefik forward auth. For those that are interested, here is the post:

https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/authentik-docker-compose-guide-2025/

Authentik has a lot of features. This guide focusses only on Forward Authentication using Traefik. Hope you find it useful.

Based on u/SalvationTanker 's Repo: https://github.com/brokenscripts/authentik_traefik

So, today I am on a netsec tear. I've known about Endless SSH for a long time now, but never really gave it a thought. Has anyone here deployed an instance Endless SSH and did it perform as described?

Other security measures I have deployed:

  • Fail2Ban
  • CrowdSec
  • SSH Keys

I believe, to deploy Endless SSH I will have to switch the active ssh port to something other than default.
